Apple Compote And Strawberries

The apple and strawberry compote is the result of  an unexpected but extremely delicious mixture.

Although the ideal is to use the same amount of one fruit and another, there are those who choose to use more of one than the other, in order to enhance the flavor of their liking.

The great advantage of the mixture is that, when preparing with ripe strawberries, it is not necessary to add sugar or, at least, not too much. 

Here are two very easy ways to make your own strawberry applesauce.

As for its use, we tell you that you can taste it at your breakfast, at dinner with a piece of fresh cheese and some grapes, or as a snack.

Traditional apple and strawberry compote

Apple compote and strawberries.

Ingredients

  • 1 glass of water (250 ml).
  • 3 small apples. 
  • 10 large ripe strawberries.
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (5 g).
  • 1 teaspoon of brown sugar (5 g).
  • 2 teaspoons of lemon juice (10 ml).
  • Optional: cloves, anise, nutmeg.

Preparation

  • We wash the fruits well.
  • Next, we proceed to peel the apples and cut them into thin slices.
  • We remove the core from the apples and discard.
  • We cut the strawberries into medium pieces.
  • We place the cut fruits in a container and sprinkle them with the lemon juice. 
  • Besides, we put a pot with water to boil.
  • Once it reaches its boiling point, we add the apples to the pot along with the cinnamon and the selected optional ingredients.
  • Let everything cook over a low heat for approximately 15-20 minutes.
  • Add the strawberries and let the mixture cook for another 10 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and add the sugar until it dissolves.
  • We remove the cinnamon and cloves.
  • Finally, we must decide whether to leave the compote with the pieces of fruit and the syrup formed, or to process it all; although both ways it is delicious.

    To make this apple and strawberry compote, we will use the same ingredients as in the previous recipe.

    Of course, it is always possible to make some modifications to vary the result a little. For example, we can increase the number of strawberries.

    Ingredients

    • 1 apple.
    • 1/2 glass of water (50 ml).
    • Brown sugar (to taste)
    • 1 cup of strawberries (100 g).
    • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (5 g).
    • 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg (2.5 g).
    • 2 teaspoons of lemon juice (10 ml).
    • Optional: cloves, anise.

    Preparation

    • We wash and drain the fruits well.
    • We peel the apple and cut it into slices.
    • We cut the strawberries into medium pieces and place them on a plate.
    • We sprinkle the fruits with a few drops of lemon.
    • In a microwave-safe container, place the cut fruits together with the half a glass of water and the cinnamon. Cover and place in the microwave for 6 minutes at 750 W.
    • Once the time is up, we let the mixture rest inside the covered container for 2 more minutes.
    • Add the sugar and stir several times with a spoon.
    • We take the compote back to the microwave for 2 more minutes at 750 W.
    • Once ready, it is allowed to cool to room temperature and then it is refrigerated to be able to eat it fresh later.

    • Do not cut the “tail” of strawberries until after washing. If we remove it, it will get water and lose flavor and vitamins.
    • If you don’t want to use sugar, agave syrup or stevia are great substitutes.
    • To preserve your apple and strawberry compote, we recommend that you use a glass container, airtight and well previously sterilized.
    • If we prepare the compote with everything and the apple skin, we can benefit from a greater amount of fiber and nutrients from this fruit than if we use the peeled apple.
    • The duration of the compote from the moment of preparation is approximately 5 days.

    The presentation for your compote

    Most of the time, a touch of cinnamon powder is added on top of the compote, to decorate it.  However, there are other options.

    • We can add a point of whipped cream and a mint leaf on top. Another option is to use a touch of plain, unsweetened yogurt.
    • We can add one or two uncut strawberries or an apple slice.
    • We can also decorate with nuts (whole or powdered) and even cereal flakes.

    The compote of apples and strawberries is excellent to take at any time of the day, because it provides us with many nutrients and has very few calories, which helps to maintain the line and contributes to leading a healthier lifestyle.
